Primavera e Autunno

a una bambina

Margherita, ti rattrista

che Goldengrove perda le foglie?

Le foglie, come le cose umane, con i tuoi

freschi pensieri tu le curi, puoi?

Ah, ma il cuore indurendo via via  

più freddo a quella vista non spende

un sospiro, anche se mondi di foglie

frantumate giacciono morte spoglie;

però tu piangerai e saprai perché.

Ora, bambina, non importa il nome:

le fonti del dolore sono uguali.

Né la bocca, o la mente, aveva detto

ciò che il cuore sentiva e l’anima intuiva:

per il danno cui l’uomo è nato,         

per Margherita, per te stessa piangi.Spring and Fall

Margaret, are you grieving

Over Goldengrove unleaving?

Leaves, like the things of man, you

With your fresh thoughts care for, can you?

Ah! as the heart grows older

It will come to such sights colder

By and by, nor spare a sigh

Though worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie;

And yet you will weep and know why.

Now no matter, child, the name:

Sorrow’s springs are the same.

Nor mouth had, no nor mind, expressed

What héart héard of, ghóst guéssed:

It is the blight man was born for,

It is Margaret you mourn for.
